MBS ANSWERS

If an admitted patient is on day leave and is referred to a adjacent private clinic for a treatment, do we bill them as an inpatient or an outpatient?

Context

We operate a co-located private outpatient clinic on the grounds of a hospital complex. A patient who is an admitted patient in the hospital is referred by the treating doctor to come to our clinic for a non-interventional procedure. After the referral has been received by us, the patient leaves their hospital bed and the hospital grounds (which changes the patient’s status from “admitted” to availing a “leave day”) and is accompanied to our clinic where we administer the treatment. We are not sure whether the patient should be billed as an inpatient or an outpatient. The patient has not been formally discharged from the hospital when they have their treatment in our clinic.
